Bufo Toad Poisoning

It’s true, we just don’t get it until it happens to us. I have listened to many stories of friends dog’s how were poisoned by a toad. It was always concerning to listen to the extreme symptoms their dogs had and how quick action could make the difference.

I rarely work on Monday. My husband gets up with the dogs at about 5:30 am and I am never available at that hour. This Monday I had an early job and got up about 6 am, standing but not really awake. I looked over at Beau and he was in real distress.

His breathing was irregular, legs stiff, and his eyes were wild. I picked him up and put him on the couch for a better look. His body was so stiff he slid right off . He was NOT foaming at the mouth and his gums were NOT red! If anything his mouth was dry. Beau had just started treatment for bladder cancer (he is doing really well!) and all I can think of is he is having a reaction to the

medication. I grabbed my clothes and was out the door immediately off to the vet. As I was leaving, my husband said he saw Beau with a toad earlier. Beau has gotten lots of frogs and toads before and never had any reaction so he had not been concerned.

Because of the hour I had to go to Palm Beach Veterinary Specialists that have an emergency clinic.
Dr. Michele Tucker saw him right away. She was concerned as Beau did not have the classic symptoms of toad poisoning but began treatment right away as David saw Beau with the toad. We had to leave him and I arranged to call every hour. As soon as Shores Animal Clinic was open I called my vet, Dr. Dale Porcher. He immediately called Dr. Tucker and checked on Beau. He felt even with the absence of typical symptoms Beau had been poisoned by the toad.

Hours went by, I called at 9am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm. The answer was always the same, Beau was resting comfortably and there was no change. Finally at the 2pm call he was fine! The vet tech said he quite suddenly got up, drank some water, and shook it all off. By 4pm he was home as if nothing happened!

I am very grateful to
Dr. Tucker and the loving staff at Palm Beach VeterinarySpecialists. They took really good care of my boy. As always, I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Porcher, always being there for my dogs and me in a crisis. Lindsey

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS POISONED BY A BUFO TOAD.

Step 1) DO NOT PANIC!!! You need to be able to think clearly and act

quickly to help save your pet. Panicking will only keep you from acting properly!

Step 2) IMMEDIATELY rinse the dog’s mouth out with a large amount of water using either a hose, kitchen sink sprayer, shower sprayer or water bottle. Rinse the mouth from side to side. DO NOT DROWN THE ANIMAL BY FORCING WATER DOWN ITS THROAT. The

toxin is very sticky and may need to be gently rubbed off of the mucus membranes of the mouth. Be very careful so as not to get bit by your pet. Even the gentlest animal may bite if it is scared, in pain or having a seizure.

Step 3) Calmly transport the dog to your veterinarian for further care.PLAN AHEAD! Save time in an emergency by preparing now. Keep the phone number of your veterinarian by the telephone. Since most poisonings occur at night CALL FIRST to make sure that the hospital is open, don’t waste time driving to a closed facility. Keep the phonenumber and address of a nearby emergency clinic near the phone too, in case your regular veterinarian is not available.
